Description

Founded in 1883, the St. Augustine Historical Society originated as an informal gathering of local individuals interested in natural history. Known by a variety of names, the St. Augustine Historical Society officially became known as such in 1953. Since its inception over 130 years ago, the Society has fostered interest in, and an appreciation of, the history and culture of St. Augustine, St. Johns County, and North Florida.

In January 2023, the St. Augustine Historical Society initiated dialog with the local veterans community. Robert Covert, our Special Collections Manager, attended and spoke at local events, met and talked with local veterans, and conducted and recorded oral history interviews with individuals who have served in nearly every conflict since (and including) World War II. We have collected a series of incredible narratives and stories across nearly every branch of service, both combatant and noncombatant. Additionally, many interviewees have offered us their photographs, writings, and other memorabilia to accompany their interviews and better tell their stories. We have also received a generous donation of material from the St. Johns County Public Library system that was part of their collaborative efforts with the Library of Congress' Veterans History Project. Those materials and links to materials already online in the Library of Congress' database have been included in this collection as well.

From the beginning, our goal has been to honor the service of St. Johns County’s veterans, to highlight and preserve their stories for future generations. In conducting and collecting oral history interviews, images, recollections of service, and other ephemera, we aim to place our veterans more visibly into the narrative of our regional history. This digital exhibit is the culmination of these efforts, a product of not just the St. Augustine Historical Society, but of the incredible members of St. John's County's active and large veterans’ community. We cannot thank them enough for their willingness and interest in participating in this project.
